The 15th annual “WGN-TV Back-to-School Kids Fair” was held Friday, August 5th, 6-9am at the WGN-TV Studios, located at 2501 W. Bradley Place in Chicago. WGN Morning News broadcast live from the event. The free fair featured food, fun, health screenings, safety tips and everything parents need to get kids ready for school.
There were plenty of entertainment including performances from The Jesse White Tumblers,the South Shore Drill Team and more. Fun activities included face painting, a petting zoo, mascots, and inflatable A Moon Jump 4-U bouncers. A fashion show was provided by Fashion Outlets of Chicago. O’Leary’s Fire Truck Tours brought a fire truck and a dalmatian. Kids also learned new things about the animal kingdom at the Brookfield ZooandShedd Aquarium booths. My Gym Children’s Fitness Center, Urban Athlete, Record-A-Hit Entertainment,Chicago Park District and Bronzeville Children’s Museumwill lead kids in fun-filled fitness activities. The StoryBusand The Storybook Mom were available for some reading and story time.
There were musical performances from Schoolhouse Rock Live: Broadway in Chicago and The Performer’s School, and magician James Sanden were in attendance and performing for children. A-Z Entertainment DJ/Karaoke, Santa’s Village Azoosment Park, Brian Wismer Entertainment, and balloon artist Smarty Pants were be present to keep children entertained throughout the morning. FootbagShop.com were on hand doing the “Footbag Challenge,” which teaches basic kicks.
Quill andLakeshore Learning generously donated school supplies to Chicago area kids. Other supplies were available at the WGN booth’s “Wheel-of-Fun,” compliments of Cook Brothers. “Wheel-of-Fun” sponsors included Pepsi, Culver’s,SkinnyPop Popcorn,Chicago White Sox, Chicago Bulls, Chicago Cubs, andChicago Blackhawks. The official T-shirt vendor is Art-Flo.
Fairgoers tool photos with team mascots from the Chicago Blackhawks (Tommy Hawk), Chicago Bulls(Benny the Bull), Chicago Sky (Sky Guy), Chicago Fire (Sparky), Chicago Bears (Staley Da Bear), Chicago Wolves (Skates), and Chicago White Sox (Southpaw).
The Chicago Department of Public HealthandBlue Cross Blue Shield’s Care Van provided immunizations to all visitors. In addition, Advanced Vision Center provided free vision screenings, Colgate’s Bright Smiles, Bright Futures Van provided free dental checks, and there was also oral cancer screenings. Lice Centers of America were be on hand doing head lice checks, and allergist Juanita Mora of Chicago Allergy Center provided seasonal allergy advice. Kmart was a part of the WGN Tent giveaways. Others booths include Tutoring Chicago, Presence Saint Joseph Hospital Chicago, Norwegian American Hospital, Metropolitan Family Services, Resurrection University, and Boeing.
Attendees can also checked out the RTA booth. The Office of the City Clerk and American Income Life provided safety tips. The American Red Cross of Chicago and Northern Illinoiswill provided first aid lessons and interactive games. SportClips generously provided free haircuts to students. Abt Electronics were on hand with the latest in back-to-school gadgetry. Thanks to Chicagoland North Corvette Club for their assistance with parking.
In addition, attendees visited the Dunkin’ Donutssampling van and Pepsi booth for free refreshments. Connie’s Pizza joined the fair once again, serving “Breakfast Pizza.” Eli’s Cheesecake, Starfruit, GoGo Squeez, Pretzel Crisps, Moo & OinkandCostco also provided food and drinks for our guests. Ann Sather provided cinnamon rolls and PLS® Financial Services has created a food truck especially for the event to pass out cold treats to everyone.
