YPW – What is Leptospirosis?

Leptospirosis is a disease that if left untreated can cause long-term damage to the kidneys or even be life-threatening. The bacteria that cause this disease are usually transmitted through wildlife urine, and in Chicago the rat population is to blame for much of the disease spread. Dogs can come into contact with the bacteria simply by sniffing or licking standing water that has been contaminated with infected urine. Luckily, there is a vaccine that provides immunity against some of the most common serovars (or strains) of Leptospirosis. Vaccines used by veterinarians protect against either two or four of these serovars. At Your Pet’s Wellness, we provide our canine patients with the vaccine that covers four of the strains.
