History-making Powerball jackpot

The estimated jackpot for Saturday’s multistate Powerball drawing has risen to $600 million, the Multi-State Lottery Association said Friday.

That would be the second largest lottery jackpot in U.S. history, behind the $656 million Mega Millions jackpot in March 2012.

An 84-year-old Florida woman claimed the second-biggest U.S. lottery jackpot Wednesday and will pocket a $370 million lump sum before taxes, state lottery officials announced.

Gloria Mackenzie bought the winning ticket in the May 18 Powerball drawing at a grocery store in Zephyrhills, near Tampa, Florida Lottery Secretary Cynthia O’Connell said.

PowerballMackenzie did not attend a news conference and pleaded for privacy in a statement O’Connell read to reporters.

The amount of the prize ballooned to $590 million as the drawing approached, with Florida lottery officials selling about $45,000 worth of tickets an hour at the peak.

Mackenzie turned down the 30-year payout and took the smaller one-time amount, O’Connell said.

There is only one winning ticket for the richest-ever Powerball jackpot, but no one knows yet who has it.

The winning ticket to the $590.5 million jackpot was sold at a Publix supermarket in Zephyrhills, Fla., a suburb of Tampa.  The winning numbers from last Saturday’s drawing were: 10, 13, 14, 22 and 52, with a Powerball number of 11.

Whoever holds the winning ticket has 60 days to clam the prize.

The winner can take an immediate cash payout of $377 million after taxes, or a smaller payout now followed by annual payouts over the next 29 years.

The previous record Powerball jackpot was $587.5 million in November 2012.

The largest lottery jackpot in U.S. history was the Mega Millions prize of $656 million in March 2012.  That prize was split among winners in Illinois, Kansas and Maryland.

The million-dollar questions have been answered. What are the Powerball numbers, and have any winning tickets been sold?

Lottery officials released the winning numbers for the largest multistate Powerball jackpot: 22, 10,13,14, 52, and the Powerball number is 11.

One winning ticket was sold at a Publix supermarket in Zephyrhills, Florida, according to David Bishop, deputy secretary of the Florida lottery.

Saturday’s jackpot is a record $590.5 million. It marks the largest in Powerball history, surpassing a $587.6 million jackpot split by winners in Arizona and Missouri in November.

The jackpot has a cash value of $376.9 million.

“I buy mine here all the time. Yesterday, I was in Naples. I bought it in Naples, That’s just my luck,” Butch Gonzalez, a regular lottery player, told CNN affiliate Bay News 9 outside the Publix in Zephyrhills.

“I just hope whoever won really needs the money, and I hope they do right by it,” he said.

The largest lottery jackpot in U.S. history was $656 million in the Mega Millions game in March 2012. That was split among three tickets sold in Illinois, Kansas and Maryland.

If there had been no winner in Saturday’s Powerball, the jackpot would have shot up to $925 million for Wednesday’s drawing, according to Kelly Cripe, spokeswoman for the Texas Lottery, which is part of the Powerball game.

Powerball is played in 43 states, the District of Columbia and the U.S. Virgin Islands. A single ticket costs $2, and the odds of winning the jackpot are 1 in 175,223,510.

Hate to break it to you, but you stand a better chance of walking onto the golf course and hitting two consecutive holes in one than winning the jackpot.

But that didn’t stop hundreds from driving to the Trex Mart in Dearborn, Missouri, where one of two winning tickets was sold in last year’s $587 million Powerball drawing.

About 100 people an hour were buying tickets at the store.

At a convenience store in Riverside, Missouri, Jim Mansell said he was buying only one ticket.

“I figure if the good Lord intends you to win, you only need one ticket,” he told CNN affiliate KCTV5. “But I don’t know if the good Lord believes in gambling or not.”

In Florida, winners must claim prizes at a state lottery retailer or lottery district office on or before the 180th day after the drawing. Any Powerball retailer in the state can validate a winning ticket.

The chances are small–

“One in a hundred and 75 million just like everybody else.”

But the thought of winning the biggest Powerball jackpot in history had lottery players lined up in stores across Chicago Friday.

“Actually I already have a few– I’m from New York so I bought there and I’m buying here.”

One lottery player said “We’re way behind the times in Alabama so we had to come all the way to Chicago to get power ball tickets.”

For many– the possibility of striking it big comes with big dreams–

“Probably a couple of summer homes, in various places and then travel Asia I think.”

You could buy parts of the world with this kind of cash.

The $600 million jackpot has a cash value near $377 million after taxes you’d take home close to $264 million.

And striking it big here isn’t out of the realm of possibility. Lottery officials say 27 people have won a million bucks or more in Illinois in the last 16 months.

On the must have list: Cars, bikes, vacations, retirement cash and of course family security.

“I’m gonna take care of my folks and my daughter she’s looking to buy a condo hopefully I can get her a condo.”

“I just want to be able to afford for us to travel and do what we want to do and spend more time here, we’ve enjoyed it so much.

The winning numbers will be drawn Saturday night on WGN at 10 p.m/CT.

The Powerball jackpot is still rising after no one had a winning ticket again Wednesday night.

The jackpot has climbed to $550 million dollars. It has a cash value of more than $350 million.Powerball

The Multi-State Lottery Association says a nationwide increase in ticket sales is what makes this prize especially large.

States can now cross sell Powerball tickets and Mega Millions tickets together.

The next drawing will be on Saturday night.

The jackpot for Wednesday night’s Powerball drawing has ballooned to an estimated $360 million.powerball

It’s the third largest Powerball jackpot in history.

The last major jackpot win was in March, when a man from New Jersey man won $338 million.

Lottery officials expect jackpot totals of this size to continue to climb in shorter amounts of time.

A game redesign in January of last year increased the odds of winning some kind of prize, but also lowered the possible number combinations to win the Powerball.
