BULLS1

BULLS BRILLIANCE

Before the Chicago basketball fans and the sportswriters can work themselves into a “Heat-stroke” about the upcoming series against Miami, let’s take a minute to stop and smell the flowers of the Derrick Rose-less Bulls.

THIBS

Winning a Game 7 on the road takes poise, heart and good coaching. Clearly the Chicago Bulls have all three.  What this team and Coach Tom Thibodeau have done should be applauded. How they did it, should be studied.

BOOZER

The most maligned player on the roster, Carlos Boozer, stepped up his game when the team needed it the most. Booz boosted elevated from his regular season stats of 16.2pp/9.8reb/47.7FG% to an impressive 17.4ppg/10.6reb/54.5FG%.

DENG

The team raised its scoring average from 93.2ppg to 97.4ppg. That’s no small feat considering the Bulls didn’t have its very best player and shot creator in Rose and its (arguably) second best player was so ill he missed the last two games of the series.  Deng also had a horrendous shooting series, hitting 40 percent from the free-throw line and even worse from the field. Ouch. Get better soon Loul.

However the biggest accomplishment of this team and coaching staff was adjusting to two different point guards with two very different styles.

HINRICH

Kirk Hinrich started the series providing good defense and a steady hand at the point. Nate Robinson ended and electrified the series, posting career playoff highs in Points, Field Goal % and Assists (17.4ppg/50.5FG%/3.6ast).

NATE

It took AMAZING coaching and preparation switching gears from the slow and steady Hinrich to the often wild and occasionally erratic Robinson.

You have to tip your hat to the Bulls, Thibs and the fans. I don’t think anyone doubted this team could win the series.

ESPN’S NBA PROBLEM

It’s just not working. The NBA Countdown show just isn’t that good. It should be better.

(Full disclosure: I’m a hardcore NBA fan)

COUNTDOWN1

I know I’m not the only one thinking this or saying this or wondering how to fix the studio show equivalent of “the sum being less than the whole of parts”. If that’s too high brow try this..NBA countdown finds a way to make fifteen cents out of a dollar.

JALEN

MAGIC

The individual parts are great! Magic is a hall of famer and he’s MAGIC!  Jalen Rose has been excellent. He’s insightful, charismatic and funny. But they ask him to do too much. Michael Wilbon is always smart, credible and knowledgeable. Bill Simmons is one of the most unique voices on the NBA and sports in general of this generation.

WILBON

SIMMONS

But when you put it all together, it just always seems to fall flat.

Listen, I know the bar is high. Inside the NBA is the gold standard. If there were something as trivial as a “Mount Rushmore of studio shows about sports”  Charles, Kenny and Ernie Johnson already have three out of the four spots. Period.  (Just FYI…in my opinion NFL network’s Rich Eisen and Deion Sanders are jockeying for the last spot)

Bill Simmons and Jalen Rose shared their lofty goals for the NBA Countdown show during a podcast on Simmons’s website Grantland.com early in the season. Safe to say, they fell short. The effort is there, the execution is not.

Here is how I would fix the show. It needs a ringleader. Think about how EJ keeps things on track and verbally spars with the Chuckster, the Jet and now Shaq. Look at how Eisen plays along with all the jokes. But he still corrals the wild energy of the Playmaker and Sapp while seguing into the analysis of Marshall Faulk and Kurt Warner and setting up Steve Mariucci for a useful nugget.

You know who would be perfect for NBA Countdown….(drumroll) …Craig Kilborn!

KILBORN2

Remember him? Kilborn was the man on ESPN’s NBA2nite in the mid 90’s. He was a pioneer of the catchphrase-witty banter-obscure reference style of sports anchoring (Jumanji!) we have come to know and love (and sometimes hate, but it’s love-hate).

Then he went on to host the Daily Show on Comedy Central.  Yes, there was life before Jon Stewart and he was pretty good.  Remember  “5 questions”???

Kilborn then followed David Letterman on the Late Late Show on CBS. Coming out to “Play That Funky Music” every episode, he was the smartest guy in the room and the coolest when it came to late night TV.

kilborn1

In addition to having the anchoring chops to handle a highlight heavy show, he has the hosting skills and the personality to lead the pack on NBA Countdown. It’s a show that could desperately use his snarky, snappy and smarmy style to give it the edge and more importantly the DIRECTION it sorely needs.

I don’t know what Kilby is doing, or if he would be interested. But in the first Daily Dime after the finals Marc Stein needs to write “find a host” as NBA Countdown’s top off season priority.

One more thing, how about some special guests??? You are doing the show from LA! Would it have killed ESPN to fly in John Starks  for the Knicks/Pacers game on Sunday??? How about James Harden for the OK/Memphis game? At least Chris Mullin for the Golden State/Denver game. He works for the network!

Same Sex Marriage and the Illinois Economy

$103 Million Dollars.

There is a new study that claims the State of Illinois could net a much that much,  if it legalizes same sex marriage.

Of course, the economics will not be the deciding factor either way. But it is something to think about, especially in a cash strapped state like Illinois.

I spoke to a number of people/groups who are against same sex marriage. They pointed to a potential cost increase in benefits, services, etc. I did not find any studies on that. But if you know of one please share.

This is a small part of this debate. But, still an interesting one.

What do you think? Are economics a factor in your thoughts on same sex marriage?

I think I speak for the majority of men. I LOVE when women wear yoga pants! In fact, the “sheerness” of them is a major plus.

So when I hear a major yoga pant supplier, Lululemon is recalling thousands of needed yoga pants due to too much “sheerness”, it hurts!

But, we all have a job to do. I hope this doesn’t discourage any prospective yoga pant wearers. I actually think this may be a violation of the man-code.

DANCING WITH CHICAGO CELEBRITIES! MY DANCE!

A great cause, a good time and bad dancing (me at least)!

I’m proud to say I helped a raise over $200,000  for the fight against breast cancer. I’m ashamed that I looked like Frankenstein doing the lambada.

I’ve have been thoroughly clowned by Larry, Robin, Paul and Erin. But, the best comment I got was “Frank you have moves like Jagger, if Jagger were built like William “the Refrigerator” Perry”

My partner Cathy Kazibut was an amazing teacher and did all she could do! Btw, it’s not too late to donate. Check out the dance then check out the link!

I hold these truths to be self-evident:

“after the show it’s the after party, and after the party it’s the hotel lobby, then right about 12 you have to clear the lobby…”

 ignition

You know the rest of the song! Who doesn’t love Reilly’s Ignition (Remix)??? The original was ok, but the REMIX!!! That is enough to inspire the depth and breadth of the nation, right?

Actually, no. The anthem is fine just the way it is. But this is a great example of great our country is.

If you have a dream, even if it’s totally ridiculous, unnecessary and unwarranted, you can make it come true. Check out the video below and decide if you support this effort.

Now usually I don’t do this…but I’m going to sign this petition!

JOAKIM NOAH = #YOJO

It’s a combination of “YOLO” and “JO” the nickname Noah is pushing with t-shirts and other merchandise, I think Joakim Noah should be known as #YOJO from now on! You have to see the Bulls live to appreciate how hard he plays on both sides of the court. I was lucky enough to have great seats for the game on Thursday. This guy plays like every game could be his last!

Joakim Noah, Spencer Hawes

Growing up a Philadelphia 76ers fan I was excited for the game vs. the Bulls for several reasons. First, I wanted to see how the Sixers young backcourt is developing. Local product Evan Turner and Jrue Holiday could develop into one of the NBA’s best in time. Second, the game was on TNT. Pro athletes know and usually take it up a notch when they are in the limelight of a national game.

Apparently, Noah was the only one to get the memo. But he always plays hard, his game philosophy seems to be the now cliche “YOLO”. The 76ers don’t really have a legitimate big man. With that in mind, it seems Noah decided to put on a 48-minute big man camp and clinic. Counselor Noah was kind enough to teach Spencer Hawes and Lavoy Allen the basics of the game for people over 6’10″.

Wow. Talk about a triple double the hard way. 23 points, 21 rebounds and 11 blocks!

#YOJO.

A “SNEAKERBALL” FOR BLACK HISTORY MONTH

In honor of Black History Month and celebrating three star athletes: Kevin Durant, Serena Williams and Didier Drogba Nike held a “Sneakerball”.

The event encouraged sneaker lovers to wear their favorite kicks while they dressed up. It was held at the Zou B Art Center on the Southside on Thursday night.

If you really want to see all the best sneaks, check out #beboldbetrue on twitter. Here is small taste, including part of a spoken word poem by Chicago’s Malik Yusef.

An emotional day in court for the man known as the ‘Blade Runner’. 26 year old Oscar Pistorious was in tears for most of the hearing according to reports. Now, the first amputee to compete in the Olympics is facing Premeditated Murder charges for the Valentine’s Day shooting death of his model girlfriend 29 year old Reeva Steenkamp.

CNN says Pistorious was too emotional to speak. But his lawyer read this statement in court.

“I tried to render the assistance to Reeva that I could, but she died in my arms,” he said in the statement. “I am absolutely mortified by the events and the devastating loss of my beloved Reeva.”

Pistorious maintains he thought he was firing at an intruder.

There are also new details emerging in the case. Police are testing boxes of drugs found in Pistorious’ bedroom the night his girlfriend was murdered. Police are also testing the runner for possible steroid use that day.

Pistorious’ hearing continues tomorrow. The judge will decide if he is eligible for bail. In a statement read by his lawyer, the Olympic sprinter said he would not try to flee or interfere with the case if given bail.
