An elderly man was killed Wednesday morning when a car struck him on the South Side on his birthday.

Family members say 77-year-old Arthur Johnson began his day as he’s started every day since 1979, walking a couple of blocks to grab his morning paper. But this morning he was hit by a car crossing Racine at 83rd St – the car kept going.

Police now search for the driver involved.

A woman faces charges tonight in a fatal hit and run that killed a man on his birthday.

Police arrested 27-year-old British Cooper at her home and charged her with leaving the scene of an accident that killed 77-year-old Arthur Johnson.

Johnson was crossing in the 8300 block of South Racine in the morning hours on July 17 when police say Cooper hit him.

Two eyewitnesses identified Cooper as the driver of the black Mercedes.

Her bond is set at $250,000 dollars.

Security video from a store near the intersection of 83rd and Racine shows Arthur Johnson as he crosses the street. Johnson apparently sees the car coming and tries to avoid it –but, the driver doesn’t stop.

Family members say Johnson was taking the same walk he did every day to buy his morning paper.

Witnesses were able to give police a good description of the car in the case.

They’re looking for a black Mercedes C230 made between 2002 -2005.

They say it has damage to its passenger-side windshield and driver-side hood.

Eyewitnesses got a good look and were shocked by what they saw.

“I heard the noise from the impact of his body hitting the ground,” said Katherine Watson.  “And then he rolled. And it was just so devastating I just can’t get it out of my mind.”

Today was Arthur’s birthday.

LaQuette Skinner, Arthur’s niece says the family is devastated. “He’s gone.  And instead of birthday cake and celebration, we’re in there with funeral directors,” she said.  “It’s terrible. It’s killing us. M y uncle was murdered this morning just walking to get his paper.”

Investigators say the car they’re looking for is a dark-colored, two-door, 2002-2005 Mercedes C230 with passenger-side windshield and driver-side hood damage.
