A Bartlett man who was driving a speedboat and killed a boy in Lake County was sentenced to 10 years in prison.

BoatingAccidentDavid Hatyina, 51, sobbed Friday as he spoke on his own behalf at the sentencing hearing.

He plead guilty to aggravated DUI in April for drinking and ingesting a small amount of cocaine before driving his boat.

He struck 10-year-old Tony Borcia last summer on Petite Lake near Lake Villa.

Hatyina delivered a very emotional address to the courtroom on Friday.

“I feel so badly for the family of Antonio. I know their pain will never go away. But, it is also etched within me that will be there forever. I hope by entering a guilty plea I have shown the Borcia family, and your Honor, that I do take responsibility for what I did. So help me God, I am sorry,” said Hatyina.

He continued:

“I can’t imagine the pain I have caused for the entire Borcia family, especially the parents and siblings.”

He added this tragedy has taught him the importance of fatherhood, and will never use alcohol or drugs again.

He’s facing up to 14 years in prison.
