A police officer shot and injured a driver trying to get away after allegedly stealing from a Kohl’s store around 10 p.m. last night in Romeoville.

Police were responding to a report of two men stealing clothing from the store at 261 S. Weber Road and saw the two men running from the store to a car and chased after them. One officer got his arm caught in the suspect’s car during a struggle.

The driver of the car ignored commands to stop and dragged the officer police said.

A second officer nearby fired three to four shots at the driver, striking him in the shoulder.

A Will County judge Saturday set bond at $400,000 for a Joliet man facing attempted murder and shoplifting charges following an incident at a Kohl’s department store in Romeoville on Friday.

Robert Russell Jr., 51, is charged with attempted murder, obstructing an officer and shoplifting following an incident that injured a Romeoville police officer who was dragged by a car in which Russell was riding. The driver of the car remains hospitalized after being shot by police.

Gerald Chamberlain Jr., 28, also of Joliet, faces shoplifting charges and remains in custody on $100,000 bond. Chamberlain was involved in the incident but remained in the store.

A Romeoville police officer attempted to stop Russell as he got into a car driven by the man who is still hospitalized. Russell allegedly held the door closed on the officer’s arm as the car dragged him. Another officer fired shots at the car, with one of the shots striking the driver of the car in the left arm. The driver of the car was hospitalized Friday and has not yet been charged.

The officer who was attempting to stop Russell from fleeing, was treated and released from Adventist Bolingbrook Hospital.

Russell and Chamberlain, both whom have criminal histories, will appear before a Will County judge on Tuesday.

Two men are charged following a police-involved shooting near a Kohl’s store in Romeoville.

On Thursday night, police responded to a report of two men stealing clothing from the store at 261 S. Weber Road and saw the two men running from the store to a car and chased after them.

One officer got his arm caught in the suspect’s car during a struggle. The driver of the car ignored commands to stop and dragged the officer, police said. A second officer nearby fired three to four shots at the driver, striking him in the shoulder.

Robert Russell  is charged with attempted murder, shoplifting and obstructing a police officer. Gerald Chamberlain is charged with felony theft.

The injured officer and the driver of the car were hospitalized with injuries that do not appear to be life-threatening. As of Friday afternoon, the driver had not been charged.
