    Rahm Emanuel’s challengers are looking forward to five debates leading up to next month’s mayoral election, to offset exposure Emanuel has enjoyed in television ads. There was no horn blast or starter’s pistol, but the race for Chicago mayor has begun. And most of the candidates are charging, full speed ahead, targeting voters and planning to get their messages out.      

  • Flu patients swamp Chicago hospital ER’s

    Flu season has arrived in Chicago earlier than usual – and hospital emergency rooms have been swamped with flu patients. On Tuesday, 28 hospitals in Chicago, that are served by EMS, had their facilities so full that patients had to be turned away. The elderly, children and people with underlying health conditions are most at risk and should seek medical attention if they need immediate help. WGN’s Robert Jordan has more on this story.

    Funeral services for former Mayor Jane Byrne were held today in the city’s Lincoln Park neighborhood. The funeral was held at St. Vincent de Paul church. It was a ceremony complete with full honors, befitting a Mayor of Byrnes importance and significance. Byrne’s nieces and nephews were honorary pallbearers and her beloved daughter Cathy gave words of remembrance.     Governor Pat Quinn, Governor-Elect Bruce Rauner, Mayor Rahm Emanuel and Senator Mark Kirk were among the dignitaries attending the city of Chicago’s Veterans Day ceremony at Soldier Field this morning. The ceremony included the traditional military posting of the flags and rousing music from the Great Lakes Naval marching band.     CTA completes full transition to Ventra cards

    The CTA has finally completed its transition to the new Ventra card fare system. Starting Tuesday, passengers can no longer use the old magnetic-strip cards. If you do not have a Ventra card you’ll have to use cash or a “contactless” credit or debit card. Riders can transfer existing balances on their old fare cards to “Ventra” until September 1st.
