    Ministers, activists to call for resignation of CPD Superintendent Garry McCarthy

    A former candidate for Illinois governor is joining a group of West Side ministers and community activists calling for the resignation of Chicago Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy. Tio Hardiman and the ministers have scheduled a press conference today to discuss their concerns with the city’s gun violence and gang problems. Hardiman says McCarthy has failed to reduce the number of murders in the city and lacks the ability to deal with the city’s gangs.

  • Man hit and killed on the Eisenhower Expressway

    A pedestrian who was walking on the Eisenhower Expressway was struck and killed by a car Saturday. 29-year-old Donnell Ewing of the 900 block of West Winona Street was in the far right lane of the Eisenhower, near Kedzie, around 7:50 p.m. when he was hit by a car heading west. Ewing was pronounced dead at Stroger Hospital. Police say it’s not clear why he was on the expressway.

    A man was shot during an attempted robbery on Chicago’s West Side and tried to drive himself to the hospital. It happened at a gas station at 600 S. Independence¬† near the Eisenhower Expressway at about 8:30p.m. Saturday night. Police say a man with a gun approached the victim and tried to rob him.¬† The victim tried to knock the gun away from the suspect and the gun discharged, hitting him in the stomach.     Illinois Senator Mark Kirk is calling again for the firing of the head of the Hines VA Hospital as he reveals new allegations of mold problems at the facility. Kirk revealed the allegations after meeting with White House Deputy Chief of Staff Rob Nabors, Hines Director Joan Ricard and hospital whistleblowers.     The widow of the truck driver killed in a crash on I-55 earlier this week has filed a wrongful death lawsuit. Deividas Mockus was killed Monday when his semi-truck slammed into the back of another truck on I-55 near Channahon. Investigators say he tried to stop but his brakes failed and he rear-ended the other semi-truck.     Sox, Bulls owner Jerry Reinsdorf hospitalized

    Jerry Reinsdorf , the owner of the Chicago Bulls and White Sox, was hospitalized late Friday night after becoming light-headed at the Baseball Hall of Fame induction ceremonies in Cooperstown, New York. The White Sox said in a statement that the 78-year-old is fine but spent the night in the hospital as a precaution. Reinsdorf was expected to be released from the hospital Saturday morning.

    Gaza (CNN) — A 12-hour humanitarian cease-fire between Israel and Hamas held Saturday as diplomats worked to create a longer truce in the conflict that has killed more than 900 people — mostly civilians.     (CNN) — The U.S. Embassy in Libya evacuated its personnel on Saturday because of heavy militia violence in the capital, Tripoli, U.S. officials said.
