    Funeral services will be held today for the mother of  five who was killed in a crash on Interstate-57 earlier this month. Lynetta Shorter was driving with her children on I-57 near Matteson on August 12th when another car struck her from behind. She was ejected from her van and killed.     The Loop CEO who was shot last month by a disgruntled employee celebrated his 55th birthday in the hospital Sunday. Steve LaVoie’s wife, Jody, wrote on the CaringBridge website that her husband “looks more like himself” each day and he no longer needs many of “the tubes and machines that have been with him” since the shooting on July 31st.     A suspect who left the scene of an accident on the Eisenhower Expressway is in custody and being treated at a hospital. Police say the two-vehicle crash took place early today on the Ike near First Avenue. When officers stopped to check for injuries they were told one person had left the scene and that he had a gun.     Missing Israeli soldier was killed in Gaza

    The soldier that Israel claimed Hamas militants captured Friday, as a temporary cease-fire to the conflict in Gaza rapidly unraveled, is dead, Israel’s military said. “Lieutenant Hadar Goldin … was killed in battle in the Gaza Strip on Friday, August 1,” the Israel Defense Forces announced early Sunday.     Two teens arrested in connection with July murder

    Two teens from the North side were arrested in Racine, Wisconsin in connection to the murder of a photographer from Rogers Park. 15-year-old Denzel Burke and 17-year-old Michael Phillips are both facing first degree murder charges. The two are accused of killing Wil Lewis on July 12th as they chased and shot at a rival gang member near Devon and Glenwood.   • New Jersey roller coaster loses power, leaves riders stranded

    What was meant to be a fun ride turned into a scary moment at a Six Flags amusement park in New Jersey. The Nitro roller coaster lost power and stopped working Friday afternoon leaving some riders stuck 230 feet in the air. They were forced to walk all the way down the emergency stairs next to the stairs – very carefully. Everyone was safely on the ground within 25 minutes, and the ride reopened an hour later after safety checks.

    Indiana Pacers’ Paul George suffers serious leg injury

    The Team USA scrimmage intended to showcase the return of Derrick Rose and celebrate USA basketball came to an abrupt end Friday night when the Indiana Pacers’ Paul George suffered a horrific injury to his lower right leg. USA Basketball released a statement Saturday morning saying that George “suffered a right leg, open tibia-fibula fracture.” He underwent surgery overnight and remained hospitalized.   He is expected to stay in the hospital for three days.     Ministers, activists to call for resignation of CPD Superintendent Garry McCarthy

    A former candidate for Illinois governor is joining a group of West Side ministers and community activists calling for the resignation of Chicago Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy. Tio Hardiman and the ministers have scheduled a press conference today to discuss their concerns with the city’s gun violence and gang problems. Hardiman says McCarthy has failed to reduce the number of murders in the city and lacks the ability to deal with the city’s gangs.
