    Iceland volcano erupts again, aviation warning raised to highest level

    Iceland has raised its aviation warning level after a new eruption from a fissure near the Bardarbunga volcano Sunday morning. The eruption was described as “a very calm lava eruption” which could “hardly be seen on seismometers”. Planes are now banned from flying within 6,000 feet of the volcano peak.   • U.S. makes airstrikes on ISIS in Iraq, drops humanitarian aid

    The United States military has carried out coordinated airstrikes on ISIS in Iraq. A press secretary for the Pentagon says the military also dropped humanitarian aid in the Iraqi town of Amerli, which is surrounded by ISIS fighters. Australia, France and the United Kingdom also took part in that aid drop late  Saturday. Amerli is without power and residents are facing severe food and water shortages.

  • Another earthquake strikes near Napa, California

    A 3.4 magnitude earthquake shook Northern California early this morning,  just a week after a 6.0 quake caused serious damage in the same area. The quake hit about 5 miles southwest of Napa and according to the sheriff’s office there are no reports of damage so far.     Ukrainian cargo plane crashes in Algeria killing 7

    (CNN) — A Ukrainian cargo plane crashed shortly after takeoff in mountainous southeastern Algeria on Saturday morning, killing seven people who were aboard, Algerian state-run news agency Algerie Presse Service reported. The Ukraine Air Alliance plane crashed about three minutes after it took off from Algeria’s Tamanrasset airport, APS reported.     Rescuers free 20 trapped miners in Nicaragua, several remain trapped

    (CNN) — Rescuers freed 20 workers from a mine in Nicaragua late Friday, dozens of hours after it collapsed and buried them underground, authorities said. Five miners remain trapped in the mine near Bonanza in the northern mountains, first lady Rosario Murillo told El 19 Digital.     It’s official! A15-foot alligator caught in Alabama two weeks ago has set a new world record. The Stokes family from Camden, Alabama caught the big gator in the Alabama River. Master Measurers from Safari Club International sized it up at 15 feet 9 inches. That’s 13 inches longer than the previous record holder, which was caught in Texas in 2007.   • Drive-by shooting kills man on the South Side

    Chicago Police are investigating a fatal drive-by shooting on the city’s South Side. It happened at 10:45pm Friday night near 54th Street and Damen Avenue in the Back of the Yards neighborhood. Witnesses say a car drove down Damen and someone inside the vehicle fired at least ten shots. A 36-year-old man was shot in the head and thigh. He later died at the hospital. His name has not been released. No arrests have been made.
