8,500 in Cook County due tax refunds

December 16, 2008

From the Breaking News Center:

Some 8,500 owners of homes and other property across Cook County are owed about $9.8 million in refunds from over payments caused by changes in assessment levels of their property, Cook County Treasurer Maria Pappas said today.

Notices to property owners identified as qualified for the refunds will be mailed this month, Pappas said in a news release.

"If they file for refunds, these owners could receive a check that would provide some relief for holiday budgets," Pappas said.

About 8,500 owners of Cook County homes, businesses and land had paid property taxes for which they had been billed.

However, when the assessed valuation of their property was lowered, that change caused their first installment payment to exceed what was due.

This qualified them for refunds totaling some $9.8 million -- an average of about $1,140 per property, Pappas said.

Even before the mailed notices arrive, Cook County property owners can see if they qualify for a refund by checking the Cook County treasurer's Web site or calling 312-443-5100, Pappas said.

The state legislature is considering that posibility today.

Republicans are airing TV spots, asking Illinois residents to pressure lawmakers to hold a vote to decide who will fill the vancancy.

The party has also set up a Website, www.friendsofblago.com. The GOP says Lt. Gov. Pat Quinn should not decide Obama's replacement.

Those against a special election cite time and expense as reasons against it.

Attorney General Investigating Sudden Closure of Republic Windows

From the Attorey General's Office:

Attorney General Madigan Investigating Sudden Closure of Republic Windows
Chicago - Responding to requests for assistance from the United Electrical, Radio and Machine Workers of America union, Attorney General Lisa Madigan has begun an investigation related to the sudden closure of Chicago-based Republic Windows, Inc. and the effect the closure is having on the company's employees and customers. Republic unexpectedly shut its doors last week with very little notice to employees.
"My Labor Counsel has been on site at Republic today talking with employees and union representatives and we will continue our investigation working as quickly as possible to protect the employees and consumers," said Attorney General Madigan. "I am extremely concerned with the actions of this company, which are having a significant impact on employees and their families."
The Attorney General is looking at all aspects of the company's closing, including its labor practices - whether it has met obligations to its employees regarding notice, any unpaid wages, severance, and vacation pay.
The Attorney General also is concerned about consumers who may have paid deposits toward the purchase of windows and may need assistance communicating with the company to get these deposits returned. Consumers having difficulty communicating with Republic regarding deposits should contact the Attorney General's consumer fraud hotline at 1-800-386-5438.

Or visit the Consumer Fraud Center online.

The Koobface worm, Facebook virus

December 5, 2008

A virus circulating the Facebook website could cause major harm to your computer.

The bug, dubbed the Koobface virus, sends out a message to other Facebook users with the subject line mentioning something about being in a new video.

The recipient is then directed to a website where they are asked to download what claims to be an update of adobe's flash player.

That file is actually the virus.

Other recent Facebook threats are the postcard scam, the 419 scam, fake emails and false chain letters.

Read Facebook's official warnings about the Koobface virus and other scams at facebook.com/security.
