Motorcyclist killed in hit-and-run on Northwest Side

CHICAGO — Police are searching for the driver of a vehicle involved in a fatal hit-and-run crash on the Northwest Side.

It happened at 7:45 p.m. Thursday in the Edgebrook neighborhood.

Steven Lajin, 22, was riding a motorcycle near Le Mai and Ionia when he was rear-ended by a small black vehicle.

Witnesses say Lajin was thrown from his motorcycle and hit a tree. He was wearing a helmet.

Lajin was pronounced dead at Lutheran General Hospital.

His family say he was one of five sons. He worked as a mechanic at his family-owned auto repair shop at California and Peterson avenues.

"He grew in my hands since 1995," uncle Ben Benyamin said. "He was a good, loving boy."

The driver of the vehicle that hit Lajin fled the scene. The only description of the vehicle is that it was a small black car.

Detectives are investigating.
