Slain commander among five new names added to Gold Star Memorial

CHICAGO -- A somber ceremony was held Friday to remember some of Chicago’s finest.

Five more fallen Chicago police officers were added to the Gold Star Memorial.

That includes the name of Commander Paul Bauer who was shot and killed in the line of duty just two months ago.

Commander Bauer’s wife and teenage daughter along with Bauer’s father and other family members were on hand for the ceremony.  His daughter Grace unveiled his name.

Bauer and four others took their place next to the 578 other Chicago police heroes who were killed or died while serving their city.

They included Captain Joseph Palczynski who died in March 1935. He died after he suffered a heart attack when a riot broke out.  Bernard Domagala died after he sustaining a gunshot wound back in 1988.  The next 29 years were spent in hospitals.  Andre Van Vegten was injured responding to a 1997 shots fired call.  He and his partner crashed their car in pursuit of suspects.  He died November of 2017.  And Officer Frank Hourihan was killed while serving in in World War I.
