CTA approves price hike, fares increase Jan. 7

CHICAGO -- The CTA board voted unanimously on Wednesday to raise bus and train fares by a quarter.

The plan will increase the cost of a bus ride to $2.25 and a train ride would increase to $2.50. The proposal would bump the cost of a monthly pass to $105. A 30-day Ventra card would cost $5 more. The new fares go into effect January 7.

The agency said state budget cuts have left them with no options.

Protesters at a public hearing Tuesday night called the hikes an "attack on the poor."

The last hike on base fares was in 2009.
