DES PLAINES, Ill. -- Thousands of people gathered in the northwest suburbs Monday for an annual pilgrimage.

Despite the snow, the faithful arrived overnight to the shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Des Plaines.

Cardinal Blase Cupich celebrated a mass for the faithful at 5 a.m.

Some pilgrims traveled all day by foot and others walked on their knees through the snow to pray.

The church says other than The Basilica in Mexico City, the shrine is the only place in the world where believers can satisfy their promises made to the Virgin Mary.

A 12-foot replica statue of Our Lady of Guadalupe from Mexico sits in the shrine.
