Report: Tolls on the Eisenhower Expressway in the future?
CHICAGO — The state of Illinois may be considering toll lanes on the Eisenhower Expressway, according to a report from “Crain’s Chicago Business.”
The report says that the Illinois transportation secretary floated the idea of tolls on the Ike at a city club speech, similar to the recent plans that would add toll lanes on the Stevenson Expressway. So far, those Stevenson plans have been held up in Springfield.
However, they say the idea is still in its beginning stages and won’t go through unless “a new revenue” source is found.
As far as the Ike goes, officials say the tolls could be added in the middle of the road from the Byrne Interchange out to I-294. That might mean private investment and a total construction overhaul.
