Giving Tuesday gets kids into the giving spirit

CHICAGO -- Organizations all across Chicagoland are participating in Giving Tuesday, with most soliciting donations online, but for some it's a day to not only give financially, but also give your time, and teach kids how to get into the giving spirit.

Giving Tuesday started in 2012 and takes place every year on the Tuesday after Black Friday and Cyber Monday as a day of giving largely fueled by social media. That first year an estimated 13 million people gave online. Last year that numbered topped $116 million raised across more than 70 countries.

If doing instead of giving is in your plan, you can help your child start small by helping a neighbor rake leaves, shovel, help with decorations, or visit with the elderly. You can also highlight daily kindess your child can do, regardless of how much money he or she does or does not have.
