BATON ROUGE, La. – A high school football team in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, the War Eagles, were named national champions.
The team had a perfect season; they were undefeated.
It’s a great achievement for any team. But the players on the War Eagles never heard a single play from their coach. All the players are deaf.
The team is led by Susan Gremillion, Louisiana’s only female high school head coach.
She took the job just weeks after her honeymoon. Her husband, who had held the job, convinced her to take it.
When she started she only knew a few words in sign language. But over the years, she and the players have learned much from each other.
“I don’t know how you put it into words. These kids, they mean the world to me, and they know that. They are that important,” Gremillion said.
