Harvey man charged with possessing dogfighting equipment; dogs removed from home

HARVEY, Ill. -- A man with a record of mistreating animals has been charged with possessing dogfighting equipment.

Cook County sheriff's police raided the home of Tyran Johnson, 59, in Harvey.

They found a modified treadmill, spring poles and other equipment associated with training dogs to fight.

Sheriff's police found four dogs.

Some had scars and appeared to be underweight.

The dogs are now being cared for at Chicago Animal Care and Control.

Johnson was not home at the time but surrendered to police this week.

He has two prior arrests for violations of animal owner's duties.
