CHICAGO -- Illinois is getting new license plates starting in January 2017.
On the new plates will be a picture of Abraham Lincoln and skylines from Chicago and Springfield.
Secretary of State Jesse White said the newly designed plates will be free of charge
The plan is to replace older plates with the new design so no license plate is on the road for more than 10-years.
White's office said the program will be paid for within his current budget.
He also says the program is needed because plate reflectivity diminishes with age, making it difficult for law enforcement to read plate numbers.
