CHICAGO -- The Metra board on Friday voted to approve its third rate hike in three years.

Fares will raise in 2017 by $11.75 for a monthly pass.

Metra's new budget called for a boost of about 6 percent.

Fares were already raised 2 percent earlier this year and 11 percent last year.

The additional revenue will pay for the modernization of the commuter rail system.
