As of 3 p.m. Cook County Clerk David Orr says he’s received no reports of serious problems with voting beyond a few election judges not showing up, a few touch-screen voting machines that had to be replaced and other issues he characterized as minor.

Orr says he doesn’t think any stations would need to remain open late because of glitches or manpower shortages.

Jim Allen of the Chicago Board of Elections says three polling places opened late in the city because of technical problems. Officials have not yet determined whether it will be necessary to keep those locations opened later.

The number of Illinois voters who cast ballots before Election Day has far surpassed records from previous years.

The Illinois State Board of Elections released totals Tuesday showing that over 1.7 million residents voted early.

The number, which counted through Monday, includes those who cast early ballots in person, sent them by mail or used grace period registration, which lets people register and vote at the same time.

The vast majority of people who voted before Election Day — nearly 1.4 million — cast in-person ballots at polls.

Compared to past presidential contests, over 1.3 million people voted before the 2008 election and over 1.5 million did in 2012.

In Chicago, roughly 400,000 people voted ahead Tuesday’s election, with over 325,000 early ballots cast in person. That bested the city’s previous record of 260,000 in 2008.

Republican Donald Trump has won the presidential contest in Indiana, with home-state Gov. Mike Pence on the ticket as his running mate.

Trump topped Democrat Hillary Clinton to become the 12th Republican to carry Indiana in the last 13 presidential elections. The victory gives Trump Indiana’s 11 electoral votes.
Neither candidate paid much attention to Indiana during the campaign. Trump essentially clinched the Republican nomination with his victory in Indiana’s May primary.
Trump was heavily favored to win Indiana even before he picked Pence as his vice presidential candidate just before the GOP convention in July.

Indiana Republican Rep. Todd Young has defeated former Sen. Evan Bayh in a Senate race that could be crucial to determining party control. The seat is now held by Republican Sen. Dan Coats, who is retiring.

An onslaught of stories about whether Bayh really lived in Indiana and his extended job search in his final year in office undercut his candidacy.
National groups have poured tens of millions of dollars into the Senate race, one of a half dozen nationally that could determine whether Democrats take over the Senate majority.
Young, a three-term congressman from southern Indiana, doesn’t have the name recognition of Bayh, whose father, Birch Bayh, was a senator for 18 years. But Young ran a strong race and was supported by outside groups.

Democratic U.S. Rep. Tammy Duckworth has unseated Illinois Republican U.S. Sen. Mark Kirk.

Duckworth won her bid Tuesday, a boon for the Democrats’ bid to regain control of the chamber.

The second-term congresswoman from Hoffman Estates previously served as director of the Illinois Department of Veterans Affairs and in a leadership role with the federal VA. She also lost both of her legs in Iraq when her helicopter was hit by a rocket-propelled grenade.

Kirk campaigned for a second term in the left-leaning state as an independent voice and was a sharp critic of GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump.
The former congressman from Highland Park suffered a stroke in 2012, but returned to Washington a year later.

The race for president and U.S. Senate in Wisconsin are too close to call based on early returns.

Republicans Donald Trump and incumbent Sen. Ron Johnson both had narrow leads based on early returns.

Democrat Russ Feingold is trying to defeat Johnson in a rematch of their 2010 race. And Democrat Hillary Clinton was so confident about her chances in Wisconsin she didn’t even campaign in the state after the primary.
That marked the first time since 1972 that one of the two major party candidates for president skipped the state in the general election campaign.
Wisconsin has 10 electoral votes.

Illinois Republicans knocked off three incumbent House Democrats and kept an important Chicago seat to make major strides toward reducing the Democrats’ supermajority and give GOP Gov. Bruce Rauner more power during an historic budget standoff.

Tuesday was shaping up to be a big night for Republicans in the Legislature. Republican Rep. Michael McAuliffe was re-elected in Chicago to remain the only GOP legislature in the city. Democrats, meanwhile, have lost three of their members — Reps. Kate Cloonen, John Bradley and Mike Smiddy.
Rauner invested more than $30 million of his own money to help Republicans in key races across the state. Tuesday’s results show that money likely helped.
Illinois has been without a budget for 16 months.

Donald Trump has won the battleground state of Iowa.

He was awarded the state’s six Electoral College votes early Wednesday.
Trump now has 244 electoral votes. His Democratic opponent Hillary Clinton has 209.
Iowa had voted for a Republican only once since 1984 but polls remained tight throughout the campaign. Trump proved popular with the state’s sizable evangelical population while Clinton and her allies campaigned frequently in its college towns.

Republicans have clinched continued House control for the new Congress.

They’ll likely lose seats from their current historic high, but they won enough seats to extend their six-year streak of commanding the chamber.

With results still being counted early Wednesday, Republicans have won at least 218 House seats. That exceeds the number needed to control the chamber.
Democrats started the year hoping Donald Trump’s divisive presidential candidacy would cost Republicans bushels of House seats. His impact on down-ballot candidates proved spotty.
Republicans now control 247 seats in the House. With a smaller GOP majority, dissident hard-right conservatives could have added leverage to press House Speaker Paul Ryan and other party leaders on the budget and other issues.

Donald Trump is leading Hillary Clinton in Wisconsin but the race remains too close to call.

With nearly all of the precincts reporting, Trump was hanging to a 3-point lead over Clinton. Should he prevail, Trump would be the first Republican presidential candidate to carry Wisconsin since Ronald Reagan in 1984.
