HARVEY, Ill -- An Illinois State Trooper has been released from the hospital after being attacked at a toll plaza near Harvey.

Police say the trooper got into an altercation with a suspect at the Halsted Toll Plaza on I-294.

According to state police, the trooper, who was not identified, was injured in the neck during the Monday incident. He was taken to a hospital, but has been released.

Authorities say the incident began when the trooper observed an alleged "suspicious person" at the toll plaza on Interstate 294 in South Holland. When he confronted the man, a struggle occurred, resulting in the man's gun discharging several times. Neither man was struck by bullets.

Police say the suspect fled on foot and was still at large. A weapon was recovered at the scene, but police say they don't know if he has another one.
