CHICAGO -- Newly released crime numbers for Chicago show the city recorded 78 murders in October.

In all, 427 people were shot.

By comparison, September had 59 murders and 358 shooting victims.

That's a 24-percent increase in murders in just one month.

But the Chicago Police Department says there is hope.

It says seven police districts actually saw their murder totals remain flat, or fall in October.

The CPD hopes its plan to add 970 more patrol officers will bring down the crime numbers.
