FOREST PARK, Ill. -- A man was shot in the hip by an officer after he allegedly stole video games from a Forest Park Walmart, ran from the cops, and eventually pulled out a knife, according to police.

Police responded to calls of a man shoplifting video games from the Walmart at 1300 Des Plaines around 2:30 p.m. Thursday. Security personnel at the store attempted to apprehend the suspect but he fled to a nearby cemetery.

A Forest Park police officer who arrived on the scene chased the suspect towards the west edge of the cemetery, police said, which is divided by the Des Plaines River.

Instead of being trapped by the river, the man jumped in and got to the other side. Additional officers then tried to arrest him there, but he jumped back into the river and tried to swim across again.

At some point, police officials say, the man pulled out a knife and put it to his neck, prompting one of the officers pursuing him to fire a shot, striking him in the hip.

He transported to Loyola University Medical Center in  Maywood with non life-threatening injuries. The two officers involved in the shooting incident were also transported to the hospital as a precaution.

The Illinois State Police Public Integrity Unit is investigating the incident.
