Mariano’s in Bronzeville opens today

CHICAGO -- Chicago's newest Mariano's opened its doors today at 6 a.m.

Located in Bronzeville,  the 74,800-square-foot store marks the second recent upscale grocery store opening in a mostly low-income, African-American neighborhood on the South Side.

Last month, a Whole Foods Market opened in Englewood.

The Mariano's store is built on the site of the former Ida B. Wells public housing site.

Bob Mariano said he wanted to commit to a full and complete store, with familiar store offerings such as an oyster bar, sushi, BBQ and a wine bar.

The store is also expected to create 400 jobs, with many of the employees from Bronzeville.

It's also part of the mayor's plan to combat food deserts in the city.
