WGN-TV has an immediate opening for a Technical Director Engineer to work in a dynamic broadcast environment. The successful candidate will be responsible for switching fast paced newscasts and recorded programming.

The successful candidate will be able to listen to director’s commands and react swiftly and accurately.  Must be able to prepare and switch video elements during live and pre-recorded programming while ensuring all content meets WGN’s quality standards. Must be able to build switcher effects and communicate and document effectively and concisely to the rest of the team.

Must be proficient with operation of broadcast equipment within assigned area, including but not limited to Technical Directing functions: switchers, routing, CGs, video playback, remote camera operation.  May be asked to train others or create training documentation.

Interested candidate must be a team player. Other engineering experience a plus in areas of audio, robotic camera, transmission or Steadicam. Experience with Sony 8000 switcher or Ross Overdrive required.



College graduate or equivalent experience. Communications, Electronic Technology or related degree is  helpful. Excellent PC skills.


Ability to sit for long periods. Able to execute commands based upon verbal or written directives. High visual and aural acuity.


Exposure to low noise levels. 


Ability to work with a team. Ability to work under deadlines with tight time constraints. Highly stressful environment at times. Strong work ethic, positive attitude and leadership qualities a must.

Desired Experience and Skills:

Previous Technical Directing experience required.

Five years of experience in professional live broadcast operations (radio/TV/cable) required.

You must be detail-oriented and have the ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment.

Working knowledge of common business software applications, particularly Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook.

Must be self-sufficient and have a press-on-regardless attitude.

Must work well in a collaborative team environment.

The WGN-TV facility originates WGN-TV/Channel 9 as well as three national networks and a 24-hour cable news operation. This position will require shift work which includes nights, weekends and holidays, along with overtime as situations demand.

This position is a staff position which will require membership in IBEW.
