WGN-TV has an immediate opening for an Overnight Master Control Engineer to work in a dynamic broadcast environment. The successful candidate will be responsible operating and monitoring on-air operations of multiple channels including national networks and local channels. Must be able to maintain WGN quality control standards and adhere to FCC rules including the FCC Children’s Television Act. Be able to demonstrate a thorough knowledge of broadcast operations.
The successful candidate will be responsible for airing proper programming, commercial and promotional material. Must be able to troubleshoot and be a problem solver. Monitor on air automation systems, making changes as necessary and ensuring the log appends. Attention to detail is essential, able to confirm elements are airing as logged and looking ahead to resolve any potential issues before they occur. The Master Control Operator is responsible for national network feeds and working with affiliates that may be experiencing technical difficulties. Must be able to operate ancillary on air equipment such as CGs, Dasdec, caption encoders, routers, switchers, and remote operation of transmitters.
Overnight operator must maintain the highest level of quality control and use excellent judgement at all times. Excellent problem solving and troubleshooting techniques and effective communication to best convey the issues necessary for resolution.
Interested candidate must be a team player. Other engineering experience a plus in areas of news production (TD, Audio), robotic camera or satellite transmission.
College graduate or equivalent experience. Communications, Electronic Technology or related degree is helpful. Excellent PC skills.
Ability to sit for long periods. Able to execute commands based upon verbal or written directives. High visual and aural acuity along with data entry using a keyboard.
Exposure to low noise levels.
Ability to work alone without supervision. Ability to work under deadlines with tight time constraints. Highly stressful environment at times.
Desired Experience and Skills:
Previous Master Control experience required.
Five years of experience in professional live broadcast operations (radio/TV/cable) required.
You must be detail-oriented and have the ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment.
Experience with television audio/video routing systems is required.
This position requires correct evaluation of on-air signal (lip sync, video, audio and captioning)
This is an overnight position that will include weekends and holidays.
Working knowledge of common business software applications, particularly Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook.
Must be self-sufficient and have a press-on-regardless attitude.
Must work well in a collaborative team environment.
The WGN-TV facility originates WGN-TV/Channel 9 as well as three national networks and a 24-hour cable news operation. This position will require shift work which includes nights, weekends and holidays, along with overtime as situations demand.
This position is a staff position which will require membership in IBEW.
