GODLEY, Texas — Inside her classroom everything seemed normal Tuesday. It was the second day of school, and Brandy Young was quizzing a group of students with a handheld clock.
In cyberspace, though, the Godley ISD 2nd Grade teacher has become a viral legend.
“I have been blown away by the response,” Young told NewsFix. “I’m so thrilled, though, that this is a conversation we’re having.”
It all started when the eight year veteran at Godley made the decision to not assign homework packets this school year. None! Nada! Zilch!
“For the age of these guys, it was more of a detriment than a benefit,” Young said. “I don’t want to send home tasks that are pencil and paper and not meaningful to their actual learning.”
It was all spelled out in a note for the parents that she handed out at ‘Meet the Teacher’ night last week. Then one mom, Samantha Gallagher, posted it to her Facebook account, and Young became a homework home run.
The tally in the past week is 70,000 shares on Gallagher’s post, and Mrs. Young is the teacher every kid now wants.
“I was just like, ‘Blah!’ I had too much work to do,” Brooke Sheldon, Gallagher’s daughter, said about her homework history before Mrs. Young.
The school is okay with all this — how couldn’t they be with the national and international publicity they’re getting?
She’s the most famous 2nd Grade teacher in the world right now, and with so many kids and parents dreading another year of homework, many of you likely hope this is the start of something big.
Anyone can work on spelling words all night, but isn’t it just as valuable to work on your family life as well?
