BURR RIDGE, Ill. -- Imagine buying a piece of lakefront property, your own personal, tranquil oasis. The one day you wake up to find the lake gone.
How do you lose a lake?
That’s what some Burr Ridge homeowners want to know.
Up until a couple of days ago, the tiny lake attracted all kinds of wildlife.
Now it’s a stinky little pond of standing water that attracts nothing but mosquitoes. And at a time when we’re worried about West Nile and the Zika virus, homeowners are pretty anxious to get their water back.
Residents say the water went from “a little low” to nothing in no time. Thousands of gallons of water were gone in a matter of hours.
The lake appears to have drained harmlessly into a nearby creek.
A broken pipe or ground erosion may have caused the vanishing act. Local officials from a few different agencies including the park district are looking into it.
