WHEELING, Ill. -- At a place accustomed to flight, the executive airport in Wheeling, Ill., today had a more grounded feel.

Governor Bruce Rauner didn’t run himself in this 5K, but did talk to the crowd and got them going.

“This is all about supporting our community here in wheeling, Rauner said. “It’s a great, great facility.”

While the 5K raised scholarship money the event came just days after Rauner signed a stop-gap measure to fund state projects. One of those was the airport’s major renovations, which would have been shut down had the bill not been signed.

Still the state remains more than a year without a budget, affecting non-profits helping the poor as well as education, an intersection of timing this Fourth of July weekend, at an event billed to help those seeking an education secure scholarships.
