This week’s new fashion trend: bee beards.

For a good cause, and to show his support for honey bees, a Washington State University Administrator Dan Bernardo let thousands of bees crawl on his face and neck, creating a bee beard.

“Initially, there’s this scratchiness, sort of moving sensation,” Bernardo said in a WSU news release. “It’s very noisy, maybe a little nerve-wracking. But I wasn’t nervous.”

According to the release, the event was part of a campaign to raise awareness of honey bee health and funding for a new Honey Bee and Pollinator Research Center at WSU.

Bernardo, along with other school members, want to build a new research facility devoted to bee health. He hopes his stunt will convince people to donate to the project.
