CARBONDALE, Ill. -- Southern Illinois University will offer an intriguing new major, starting this summer -- brewing. Well technically it's called "fermentation science."
“The rapid growth in the craft brewing industry had led to demand from fermentation scientists with strong scientific training and coursework focused on brewing science,” said Matt McCarroll, director of Fermentation Science Institute at SIU, and professor of chemistry and biochemistry.
“We know this is a growth industry and our students will be well prepared to gain employment in this field," he continued.
Students will also get some on-the-job experience at one of many micro-breweries in southern Illinois.
