CHICAGO -- The subway attack in central Brussels came 79 minutes after the airport attack. It targeted the headquarters of the European Union. On their way there at the time was a group of students from Depaul University. They’re all safe tonight.
Depaul University’s Joe Schwieterman was leading a group of 18 students in Brussels to study diplomacy. They were about to board a train bound for the EU’s headquarters when they got word that an explosion had gone off in the subway beneath their destination.
The group of Depaul students are still in the Brussels area hoping to continue their studies tomorrow at NATO headquarters -- but aware not just of how quickly their plans may change, but of close they came to to the deadly blast.
