CHICAGO — The Chicago Teachers Union will ask its members to walk off the job for one day as part of a demonstration over contract talks and education funding.

CTU officials say they will not go to work on April 1 and they hope to close the schools.

CTU says it is planning a special meeting of the House of Delegates next week to approve the walkout.

CPS officials have said that the teachers union cannot legally strike until a “fact-finding” part of their contract negotiations is complete.

CPS says that won’t be finished until mid-May.
