CHICAGO -- Three veteran Chicago police officers are recovering today after being shot while conducting a drug investigation on the West Side. Two of the officers are out of the hospital and the third is said to be resting in good condition.
The officers were shot just before 10 p.m. Monday outside an apartment building in the 3700 block of W. Polk.
The officers approached a man and a woman in the courtyard, and the man took off.
The officers chased the man into a dark gangway. Police say the man fired shots, hitting all three officers.
At least one officer returned fire and killed the man. His gun was recovered at the scene.
The officers were taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries and are expected to be OK. They will now be placed on desk duty for 30 days, which is a new department policy for all police-involved shootings.
No word yet on suspects.
