CHICAGO -- It is an exciting and extremely busy week for long time friends Vineeta Santoshi and Uma Vaiyapuri: for the past 18 months they have been mixing and cooking and testing as they perfect recipes for their new business, Chutney Devis.

Their line of homemade chutneys and spices are inspired by recipes and techniques of Uma’s childhood spent in her kitchen in India with her father.

Uma grew up loving to cook, but only decided to make it a business a year and a half ago, after this engineer with a master’s in computer science decided to ditch the corporate world and chase her love of food instead.

And so they started cooking and trying to build a business, not a simple task they discovered. But it did get easier when the Lakeview Kitchen opened last spring. Not only did it give them access to a fully equipped 5,000- foot shared commercial kitchen, it gave them a space to launch their line.

This Saturday is Uma and Vineeta’s official launch event. They’re ready with a peanut chutney, a cilantro chutney and a homemade curry powder.
