CHICAGO – It’s been mentioned a number of times about the ups and downs of Nikola Mirotic in his second season in the NBA.

The same could be said about his Wednesday.

Just hours after being named to the roster of the NBA’s Rising Stars challenge, the forward underwent an appendectomy after being diagnosed with acute appendicitis, the team said in a statement released on Wednesday.

“Bulls forward Nikola Mirotić was diagnosed with an acute appendicitis,” said the team. ” An appendectomy was performed earlier today at Rush University Medical Center and went as expected.”

In the release the team said that Mirotic will not travel with the team to Los Angeles as they start a seven-game West Coast road trip on Thursday against the Lakers. He is expected to return to the Bulls lineup after the All-Star break.

In a bit of a roller coaster season for the second-year player Mirotic is averaging 10.6 points and 5.9 rebounds per game. That included scoring a combined 32 points in his last two games against the Cavaliers and the Heat.
