WHEATON, Ill. — Officials at Wheaton College are being asked to back off on their effort to fire a controversial professor.

Larycia Hawkins faces dismissal for saying Muslims and Christians worship the same God, and for wearing a hijab to show her solidarity with Muslim women.

The Christian college says Hawkins refused to clarify her positions on theological issues.

The school’s faculty council says officials are over-reacting.

A decision on Hawkins’ fate could come next month.
