WASHINGTON — The Justice Department is acknowledging that the FBI took over a child pornography website, but left it online in attempt to catch users.

It happened over nearly two weeks, early last year.

The admission was made in newly released court filings.

The website had more than 215,000 registered users, and included links to more than 23,000 sexually explicit images and videos of children.

100,000 users accessed the site while it was under the FBI’s control.

At least 137 of those users have been charged with a crime.

This is at least the third time in recent years the FBI has conducted such a sting operation.
