CHICAGO – A man has been charged after a 5-year-old boy accidentally shot himself in the hand over the weekend.

According to Chicago police, Myles Mitchell, 23, of Washington Park, was charged with one count of misdemeanor child endangerment and one count of misdemeanor unlawful use of a weapon.

Police say Mitchell admitted to having the firearm in the home, and placing the firearm where it could be retrieved by the boy. Police say this placed the child in a dangerous environment which lead to the child’s injury.

The incident happened Saturday afternoon in the 5900 block of South Calumet Avenue in the Washington Park neighborhood.
