Chicago student’s viral video shows people’s reactions to being called ‘beautiful’

CHICAGO — A Chicago high school student’s art project that exceeded her expectations has gone viral.

Shea Glover, a student at Chicago High School for the Arts in Ukrainian Village, explained on social media how she documented people’s reactions to being called beautiful for an “independent project” in May. The resulting video uploaded to YouTube has since garnered more than six million views.

Glover wrote on YouTube that the task began simply as an art project to show people who she said personified “beauty.” What came out of it, however, was what she later called a “social experiment.” One by one, a diverse group of students stand in front of the camera, and Glover can be heard out of frame explaining how the video is meant to depict people who are beautiful.

The result of each reaction was, in each its own way, beautiful.

From laughter to blushing, from defensiveness to shyness, Glover captured priceless reactions from her subjects being told they’re beautiful.

“I want to clarify that my intentions were not to get a reaction out of people. I was simply filming beauty and this is the result,” Glover wrote in the description of the video.

Along with its six million views. the video has attracted more than 70,000 “likes” on YouTube and thousands of comments.

“All these people are beautiful,” wrote on commenter.

Remarked another, in part: “Truly Beautiful. Marvelous, Shea… Thank you for seeking out, and sharing, the beauty every one has.”

And so on.

Glover then released a couple of videos reacting to her experiment’s success. “I had no idea this was going to get this big,” she said in one that was uploaded Monday.

Glover wrote in a discussion panel on her YouTube channel that she intends on doing more experimental films as well as video blogs.
