GREEN GARDEN TOWNSHIP, Ill. — What some Will County residents believed was an explosion Thursday afternoon actually turned out to be some adults shooting target practice.

At 12:45 p.m., police responded to reports of explosions at a cornfield near Monee Manhattan Road and Center Road in Green Center Town, Will County Deputy Chief Tom Budde said.

Police found a group of adults in legal possession of firearms and tannerite, a type of exploding target for firearms practice. When the target is hit with a rifle, it makes a loud sound, like an explosion.

Budde said tannerite can be purchased at many sporting goods stores.

Police asked the men to stop and the group left the area.
