Virginia boy, 8, finds true love as he battles cancer

CHESAPEAKE, Va. —¬†Fighting multiple battles with cancer, a Virginia boy’s entire life has been a struggle. But his mother says something has lifted his spirits: love.

You may think 8-years-old is too young to know about love, but for David Spisak and his 7-year-old girlfriend Ayla, it’s a once-in-a-lifetime kind of love.

David Spisak is 8-years-old and has Leukemia. He’s been living with cancer on and off since he was 2.

He was given just weeks to live, so that’s what his parents decided to do – let David live.

David and Ayla met their first day of second grade, but it wasn’t long until David had to stop going. He could no longer walk, but that didn’t keep him from seeing Ayla.

David’s mom, Amber Spisak, said that Ayla has had an impact on his spirit and she hasn’t “seen this side of him in a long time.”

Last weekend, they had their first date, and once again, his will to overcome was stronger than the cancer.

David’s mother said, “He forced himself out. Not only did he stand up, he stood up and bowled, and she was right beside him the whole time.”

When David was asked how he knows he loves Ayla, he said, “The heart knows.”

Ayla’s mom, Angela Andrews, said, “Their story is definitely, definitely something everyone can learn from — just to love, because that’s what’s important. At the end of every day, that’s what’s important: who loves you and who you love back.”
