FOX LAKE, Ill. -- We're learning more details of what happened in the hours before Fox Lake police lieutenant Joe Gliniewicz killed himself.

Before Gliniewicz staged his own suicide in September, he tried to enlist a gang member to murder village administrator Anne Marrin, whose investigation exposed the lieutenant's embezzlement scheme.

He may have also plotted to plant drugs on her to discredit her investigation.

The man who was considered a community hero, instead skimmed tens of thousands of dollars from Fox Lake's youth Explorers program and spent it on vacations, mortgage payments and adult web sites.

Investigators are examining evidence that his widow and at least one son were in on the scheme.
