MCHENRY COUNTY, Ill. --Teachers are walking picket lines and about 2500 high school students are home today in McHenry.
Talks between teachers and District 156 broke down at about 1 a.m. Talks have been ongoing since March, and teachers have been working without a contract since the summer.
The district is offering 2 percent raises, but the teacher’s union is demanding at least 3 percent, because of givebacks in earlier contracts.
The teachers are also upset at the district’s proposal that they pay half the cost of their health insurance.
Both sides agree progress was made before talks ended overnight.
It’s hoped negotiations will resume within a day.
