Suburban mother awarded medal for heroic actions posthumously

An Arlington Heights woman who lost her life while saving three boys will receive the Carnegie Medal for her heroic actions.

Karen Wessel drowned while trying to save the boys in a lake in northern Wisconsin last year.

The three boys survived.

The 47-year-old mother is one of 22 recipients of this year’s award.

The award is given to those who risk their lives to an extraordinary degree to save others.

Four of the recipients did not survive their heroic acts.
