Scathing report released on Metra: Are commuters’ safety at risk?

CHICAGO — Metra has confirmed that it will expand a pilot program allowing pets on its trains starting this fall.

Beginning Oct. 10, all of Metra’s weekend trains will allow riders to bring their pets on board in carriers. The move follows a June program that allowed pets on Rock Island District trains from Chicago to Joliet during the weekends.

The program will run through Jan. 31, at which time Metra will reevaluate on whether to continue it.

The new recommendation will be discussed during a meeting on Monday, but a spokesman said the Metra board of directors is expected to approve the measure. Metra says there was strong support for the initial program by Rock Island riders during the first wave of the pilot.
