WHITTIER, Calif. — California police are investigating the death of 19-year-old student with special needs after he was found dead on a school bus.

The student was found Friday afternoon in Whittier, Calif., near Los Angeles. Police say the man’s mother called the bus company when her son didn’t come home after school. KTLA reports the student had boarded the bus to attend Sierra Vista Adult School in Whittier.

The bus driver returned to the bus yard and found the student inside the bus. Police say bystanders and medics tried to revive the man, but he did not survive.

Authorities say they don’t yet know why he died. According to KTLA, it was unclear how long he had been on the bus, but police are investigating the possibility that the he may have been left on the bus all day after reports he never got off at school.

Police questioned and released the bus driver. No arrests were made.
