CHICAGO-- It was a busy morning for Illinois State Police-- and a miserable commute on the Eisenhower.

Around 4:30 a.m. Friday, there was a single vehicle rollover accident in the westbound lanes near Laramie. Capt. David Byrd, Illinois State Police said there “were six occupants in that vehicle. There was an ejection and one female subject lost her life in the crash.”

Then around 8:00 a.m. during the height of the morning rush hour, a shooting took place on the eastbound lanes between Austin and Central. Capt. Byrd said “there were so many cars in that area there could have been multiple shooting victims.”

Police say shots were fired from a blue jeep with tinted windows, hitting a grey minivan.

The driver, shot several times, pulled off 290-- ending up in this alley on West Maypole at a friend's house. There were visible drops of blood on the front stoop of the home--- where an ambulance picked him up.

Sherry Kilpatrick, a concerned resident, said “it's very dangerous. That's why I don't use the expressway anymore, because I fear my life.”

Illinois State Police say there has been a major spike in expressway shooting. Last year there were 19 total-- this year alone there have already been 26.

State police have increased patrols on the Dan Ryan and Eisenhower between 12:00 a.m to 4 a.m.

Capt. Byrd said they “target those hours because intelligence tells us that's what we should be doing, to be honest with you I was shocked to hear it happened during rush hour.”

West side residents say they don't feel safe anywhere.

Christopher Smith, who lives near the scene, said “I have an auntie a while back waiting at the bus stop shot in the foot waiting for her daughter to come home from school so it's crazy. Chicago going crazy they don't want to call it chi-raq but that's really what it is.”
