CHICAGO — A 7-year-old boy who was celebrating the Fourth of July with his family was among three people who were shot and killed overnight in Chicago.
Police say 7-year-old Amari Brown was shot after someone opened fire just before midnight Saturday in the Humboldt Park neighborhood. He was pronounced dead early Sunday at Stroger Hospital. Relatives say the boy had been celebrating with family when he was shot.
"I don't know how me and my family are going to go on," said the boy's mother, Amber Hailey. "My baby was everything to this house."
The second grader at Erickson Elementary was in the front yard along with at least 20 other children after a fireworks show when gunshots hit him in the chest.
The boy's father, who would not speak with WGN Sunday morning, is a documented gang member who police said was the intended target.
A 26-year-old man was also fatally shot in the Albany Park neighborhood and a 26-year-old man was gunned down in the South Shore neighborhood.
Police say two men also were killed after dawn Sunday when somebody fired on their SUV, which sped away and crashed. The 25-year-old driver died of gunshot wounds and 31-year-old passenger died of gunshot wounds or the crash.
